Shannon Trust is pleased to announce the appointment of Lucy de Groot as Chair of Trustees.

Lucy brings a wealth of experience from a distinguished career in public service and the voluntary sector. She has held senior leadership roles including local council Chief Executive, senior civil servant at HM Treasury, and Chief Executive of a national volunteering charity.

Alongside her executive career, Lucy has served on a wide range of boards across health, education and the voluntary sector. Her previous roles include positions within the NHS, Vice Chair of a high-performing adult education college, and trustee roles within national charities supporting children and social justice. Most recently, she chaired an independent human rights and social justice foundation. She is also currently a trustee of a national charity providing policy analysis and consultancy for charities, social businesses and philanthropists.

Lucy began her career as a community worker and has remained closely connected to grassroots initiatives throughout her career. She has also volunteered as a literacy tutor, giving her a personal understanding of the importance of access to basic skills.

Commenting on her appointment, Lucy de Groot said: “The Shannon Trust embodies my commitment to access and opportunity, and to the critical importance of basic skills for people to survive, flourish and be part of society. The peer-led approach to learning is particularly powerful. I am excited by the organisation’s ambition to expand its reach beyond custody and into communities, creating new opportunities for partnership and impact. Supporting people within the criminal justice system to build skills and confidence is a mission I am proud to be part of.”

Lucy’s appointment comes at an important moment for Shannon Trust as the organisation begins delivering its new strategy, focused on expanding reach and deepening impact within the criminal justice system.

Dr Jane Rigbye, Chief Executive of Shannon Trust, said: “We are delighted to welcome Lucy as Chair of Trustees. She brings exceptional leadership experience alongside a deep commitment to the values at the heart of our work. As we deliver our new strategy and look to expand our reach and impact, Lucy’s insight and guidance will be invaluable.”

Shannon Trust works across the criminal justice system to support people to improve their reading and numeracy skills, helping to build confidence, increase opportunity and reduce reoffending.
