Leanne

Shannon Trust Prison Facilitator

I would like to share about a learner who joined the programme early last year. When he started he found it a real struggle. Regardless, he attended weekly sessions in the library as he didn't want others on the wing to know that he was receiving support for his reading. However, due to regime restrictions, we started offering him weekly outreach sessions in his workplace. His stammer, which was present at the beginning, is rarely an issue for him now, and he has worked his way to manual 5. The change in his reading ability and self-confidence has been amazing to witness. He has told me how beneficial this has been for his day-to-day life, in particular ordering his canteen and menu choices as they no longer take him 3 hours to complete. His transformation has been one of the highlights of my role and I hope he is very proud of what he has achieved.
