I had a man who was a traveller and he could not read or write so he couldn't complete any offence focused workbooks and he said everything was hard for him in the community, for example he couldn't even read signs on the road or places he wanted to visit.

I referred him to Shannon Trust and they taught him and he was then able to do things like the victim awareness workbook, so the Shannon Trust helped him look at his offence and the impact it had on his victims - it also gave him better opportunities for work when he got out.

He told me that he felt there was a reason he came to prison and that was to be taught how to read and write so he would have a better future.
