Introducing Ian Merrill, our CEO

We're delighted to confirm Ian Merrill is our CEO. Ian took up his post in October 2020 replacing Angela Cairns.

About Ian

Ian joins Shannon Trust with considerable experience of the charitable sector, gained in roles ranging from volunteer to CEO. Ian has an operational background in substance misuse services, criminal justice, homelessness and mental health, and a track record in business development through competitive tendering, fundraising and corporate partnerships. Ian has held senior roles at national charities and joins Shannon Trust from Tempo, where as CEO he led the development of a social currency used to increase volunteering and social action across England & Wales.

Commenting on his appointment, Ian said:

‘For most of us, reading is a skill we take for granted, I’m privileged to be joining an organisation which unlocks the power of the written word. Shannon Trust has already achieved a great deal in its twenty years.  It has supported many in the criminal justice system to become readers and through its unique mentor led approach, grown the skills and confidence of its beneficiaries to deliver our reading programmes - changing lives for the better. I’m excited to build on what has been achieved and I’m looking forward to working with the Board of Trustees, staff, volunteers and mentors to develop and expand our work, improving our impact as we do so.’

Welcoming Ian's appointment, Sue O'Hara, Chair of Trustees said:

‘I am delighted Shannon Trust has secured Ian’s leadership experience, his knowledge of the charity sector and his passion for making a positive difference. His skills and enthusiasm will help our team to build on our success and further our vision and mission, whilst navigating the impact of Covid-19 on our work. The Board and staff team are looking forward to working with Ian to increase opportunities for people caught up in the criminal justice system to unlock the power of reading and together change lives for the better.’
