We work with prisons to set up and maintain the Toe
by Toe Reading Plan so that prisoners who can
read are able to teach those who do not read. We do this by
supplying prisons with:
trained volunteers to help staff and prisoners set up and maintain
a reading plan that is tailored to the needs of the specific
establishment;
copies of Toe by Toe to every learner and every prisoner involved
in mentoring others;
promotional resources to raise awareness and attract new learners;
on-going support.
We ask that:
learning takes place five times a week;
learning lasts no more than 20 minutes per session;
learning is one-to-one;
learning takes place in a suitable environment.
Why does it work?
The Toe by Toe Reading Plan works because it:
facilitates one-to-one learning opportunities for prisoners;
engages the most difficult prisoners to reach;
costs the establishment very little money and staff time;
gives prisoners (both mentors and learners) responsibility
for their own learning;
complements other learning opportunities in prisons and secure
establishments;
has a committed team of representatives who are passionate
about changing lives for the better;
attracts charitable donors who are extremely supportive of our work.
