Volunteer with Shannon Trust

Our volunteering opportunities are challenging, very flexible and extremely rewarding. We provide induction, training and ongoing support. We pay out of pocket expenses.

We have three types of volunteering opportunities:

1. Shannon Trust Volunteer Prison Representatives are allocated a prison or secure establishment which they visit once a month on average. Their role is to:

  • advise the establishment on how to develop the Reading Plan to reach as many non-readers as possible;
  • raise the profile of Toe by Toe amongst the Senior Management Team and the staff and prisoners;
  • support the staff who facilitate Toe by Toe within the prison;
  • monitor the success of Toe by Toe and report;
  • support the establishment to maintain the plan during staff and regime changes.

2. Shannon Trust Volunteer Area Co-ordinators support a team of Shannon Trust Volunteer Prison Representatives in a specified geographical area. Their role is to:

  • co-ordinate and support the team in raising awareness of the Toe by Toe Reading Plan, and promoting the value of peer-mentoring in designated prisons and Young Offenders Institutions;
  • support individual volunteers within the team to start-up and maintain the Toe by Toe Reading Plan in their allocated establishments;
  • maintain an overview of the team’s progress and report it to Head Office.

3. Shannon Trust Volunteer Area Secretaries support the Area Team by providing administrative support to the Volunteer Area Co-ordinator.
