The Facts…

64% of prisoners re-offend within two years following release. An exceptionally high proportion of these offenders have very poor reading skills.

Prisoners who have poor reading skills are most likely to leave prison no better equipped for life than at the time they were convicted. Prisoners go to great lengths to disguise the fact that they struggle with reading.

The Toe by Toe Team at HMP Haverigg

Ex-offenders are three times more likely to re-offend when unemployed but if you want to work you must be able to read…

Over 90% of all employment in the UK requires employees to be able to read - half of all offenders leaving prison are unable to do this.

The social and economic impact upon our society of prisoners being unable to read is huge… but avoidable.

Learning to read has other far-reaching impacts on prisoners such as improved
self-esteem and confidence which has been proven to lead to:

  • prisoners entering education and skills training for the first time;
  • improvements in attitude and behaviour;
  • improvements in family relationships;
  • realisation that life can be better and they have the power to make it so.

The success of the programme is due to our dedicated team of volunteers and prison staff, who give up their own time to support the Toe by Toe Reading Plan.
