The Challenge
- without the ability to read, it is almost impossible for prisoners
to engage in the further learning and training they need to address
their offending behaviour, gain qualifications and find employment;
- many prisoners have had negative past experiences of learning,
and are therefore reluctant to take up the formal learning opportunities
available within prisons;
- prisoners with poor reading skills are one of the most difficult
group to reach;
- prisons are busy places and security and safety are the top
priorities, thus it is very difficult for prisons to provide
one-to-one learning opportunities to all those who need them.
